A watch is a good gift because it is worn every day and rarely bought for oneself. It is also one people quietly stop wearing if it misses, so a little observation goes a long way.
You do not need a wrist measurement
This is the worry that stops most people, and it is unfounded. Metal bracelets size by removing links, which a jeweller does in minutes and many are happy to do free. Mesh adjusts anywhere along its length. Leather and nylon have holes or continuous adjustment.
The only styles that genuinely need a measurement are rigid bangle and cuff watches, which have no adjustment at all.
What to observe instead
Metal tone. Look at the rings, earrings and other jewellery they wear most. Silver-toned or gold-toned? This single observation does more than anything else to make a watch get worn.
Minimal or decorative. Do they wear plain pieces or ones with detail and stones? A statement watch on someone who wears nothing but a thin chain will sit in a drawer.
Case size, roughly. If they already wear a watch, note whether it looks small and neat or fills the wrist. You are matching a habit rather than a measurement.
The safest choice
A slim, minimal watch on a mesh bracelet, in the metal tone they already wear.
Mesh fits the widest range of wrists with no adjustment needed, a minimal dial goes with everything and dates slowly, and a slim case slides under a sleeve. It is the combination least likely to miss.
Case size as a rough guide
Women's watches typically run from about 26mm to 38mm across the face. Around 30mm to 34mm suits most wrists and reads as neither small nor oversized.
Thickness matters as much as width and gets far less attention. A slim case under about 8mm is comfortable under sleeves; a thick one catches and feels larger than its diameter suggests.
When a statement piece is right
If they wear bold jewellery already, a larger case, a coloured dial or an unusual shape will land well.
Just know that statement watches get worn on purpose rather than by default, so they suit someone who owns several watches more than someone who will wear one every day.
Practical things worth checking
Water resistance, if they are likely to keep it on in the shower. Ratings describe a new watch in a lab, so treat them conservatively on any watch that is a few years old.
Leather versus metal, if they are hands-on at work or with children. Leather needs care and does not like water; mesh takes a knock and cleans easily.
Quick-release spring bars, which let the band be changed in seconds without tools. It turns one watch into several and makes a good gift better.
Presentation
If you can, include a note that the bracelet can be sized, and where. People often assume a watch that arrives loose is simply the wrong one, and wear it once before putting it away.
If you are truly unsure
Mesh, minimal, matching metal tone, mid-size case. It is the jewellery equivalent of a safe bet, and safe bets get worn.
