If you have just bought a Galaxy Watch 8 or a Watch 8 Classic, there is one thing to know before you buy a band: your old Galaxy Watch bands will not fit.
Samsung changed the attachment system with this generation, and it is a bigger break than it first appears.
The Dynamic Lug System
Every Galaxy Watch from the Watch 4 through the Watch 7 used standard 20mm quick-release spring bars, which meant almost any 20mm strap on the market would fit.
The Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic replace that with Samsung's Dynamic Lug System, a slide-in connector closer in principle to the Apple Watch or Pixel Watch. Bands click into the case rather than pinning between lugs.
Samsung says the change improves the strap angle and sensor contact against the wrist. The cost is compatibility.
What no longer fits
Bands from the Galaxy Watch 7, 6, 5 and 4 do not fit the Watch 8 or Watch 8 Classic. Neither do generic third-party 20mm pin-style bands, whoever made them.
If you have built up a collection of straps over several generations, they do not carry over. That is genuinely disappointing, and worth knowing before you order.
Galaxy Watch Ultra bands are not a substitute
The Ultra also uses a Dynamic Lug connector, so people reasonably assume its bands will fit. They will not. Samsung has confirmed the Ultra's bands are wider, so they do not sit cleanly on a Watch 8 or Watch 8 Classic.
The two sizes
Watch 8 bands come in two sizes, matched to the case.
Small fits the 40mm Galaxy Watch 8.
Large fits the 44mm Galaxy Watch 8 and the 46mm Galaxy Watch 8 Classic.
Within a size, bands are interchangeable across the Watch 8 line. Check which case you have and order to match.
What about adapters?
Dynamic Lug adapters exist that let you fit a conventional pin-style band to a Watch 8.
They work, but they are a compromise. They add bulk at the lug, they can affect how the case sits against your wrist, which matters for heart-rate readings, and they rarely look as clean as a band made for the connector.
If you have expensive straps you cannot bear to retire, an adapter is a reasonable stopgap. As a permanent solution it undoes the reason Samsung made the change.
Choosing a material
Silicone is the everyday default. It handles sweat, showers and swimming, wipes clean, and is comfortable for sleep tracking, which matters on a watch people wear around the clock.
Woven nylon is lighter and more breathable, better for summer and long wear.
Leather suits the Classic particularly well, since the rotating bezel already gives it a traditional watch look. Keep it dry.
Stainless steel and mesh give the most formal finish, with mesh adjusting to any position along the band.
Changing a Dynamic Lug band
The release is on the underside of the watch case rather than on the band itself. Press it and pull the band away from the case; there is no twisting motion involved. Bands click audibly when they reconnect.
It is quicker than the old spring bars once you are used to it, and it needs no tools or fingernails.
Fit and sensor accuracy
The Watch 8 reads heart rate from the wrist, and that depends on steady skin contact. It should sit snug about a finger's width above the wrist bone.
Too loose and the sensor reads motion rather than pulse. Too tight restricts blood flow and skews readings the other way. Many people wear the watch slightly higher during exercise and lower the rest of the time.
