Google Pixel Watch Bands: How They Work and What Fits

Pixel Watch bands work differently to almost every other smartwatch. There are no lugs, no spring bars, and no millimetre size to shop by. Google designed its own connector, and it changes how you buy a replacement.

Here is what you need to know.

You cannot use a standard watch band

This is the first thing to get clear. A 20mm strap, however well made, will not attach to a Pixel Watch. The case has no lugs for a spring bar to sit between.

Instead, the band slides into a channel on the side of the case and twists to lock. It is a neat design and the band sits flush with the case, but it means the band has to be built specifically for the Pixel Watch.

Shop by case size, not by generation

Pixel Watch bands are sold in two sizes, and the size follows the case rather than the model year.

41mm covers the original Pixel Watch, the Pixel Watch 2, and the 41mm versions of the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4.

45mm covers the larger Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4.

Within a size, bands are interchangeable across generations. So a band bought for an original Pixel Watch fits a 41mm Pixel Watch 4, which is unusually good news in a category where manufacturers change fittings constantly.

If you are not sure which case you have, check the box or the settings menu. The difference between 41mm and 45mm is visible side by side but hard to judge alone.

Changing a Pixel Watch band

Hold the watch with the band you want to remove facing you. Press and hold the release button next to the band opening, then rotate the band gently away from the case. It will slide free from the channel.

To fit the new one, line the connector up with the opening, slide it in, and twist until it seats and clicks. Both halves work the same way, though they are shaped differently, so the top band will not fit the bottom slot.

It takes a few goes to get comfortable with. The motion is a twist rather than a pull, and people who force it straight out are the ones who find it difficult.

Choosing a material

Silicone active bands are the default. They handle sweat, showers and swimming, wipe clean, and are comfortable enough for sleep tracking, which matters on a watch designed to be worn around the clock.

Woven nylon and trail loops are lighter and more breathable. The best choice in heat and for overnight wear.

Leather smartens the watch up considerably. The Pixel Watch's domed, pebble-like case looks more like jewellery than most smartwatches, and leather leans into that. Keep it dry.

Stainless steel and magnetic mesh give the dressiest finish. Mesh has the practical advantage of adjusting to any position rather than to the nearest hole.

Because the case is small and rounded, slim bands suit it better than chunky ones. A wide sport band fights the shape.

Fit and heart-rate accuracy

The Pixel Watch reads heart rate from the wrist, and that depends on consistent skin contact. It should sit snug about a finger's width above the wrist bone.

Too loose and the sensor reads motion rather than pulse, which shows as a heart rate that lags behind your effort or jumps during intervals. Too tight restricts blood flow and skews it the other way.

Many people wear the watch slightly higher during exercise and move it back down afterwards.

Worth owning two

Silicone for training and sleep, something metal or leather for everything else. Swapping takes seconds once the twist becomes familiar, and it means the dress band lasts considerably longer.
